Antibody array technology represents a natural extension of projects developed at Progenika for the detection of nucleic acids and can be used for the simultaneous analysis of hundreds or thousands of proteins. Antibody microarrays rely on the use of highly specific antibodies that bind antigens in the proteins or other biomolecules that it is wished to detect. Each of the antibodies is printed in functionalized glass surfaces at distinct and addressable locations using specialized platforms for protein printing from Digilab Inc. (Genomic Solutions) and Arrayit Corp.
There are many applications and formats for antibody microarrays. One is the qualitative detection of antigens allowing the development of tools for epidemiological monitoring of infectious diseases as exemplified by Pneumoarray®.
Antibody microarrays can also be used for the quantification of protein markers in complex biological samples through "sandwich" immunoassays for the detection of multiple proteins.
